JORDAN'S FIRST
LFG POWER PLANT

The Russifa project is the founding milestone of Jordan Biogas Company. Commissioned in 1998, it marked the first time landfill gas was captured and converted to electricity in the Kingdom of Jordan.

JBC has operated this facility continuously from 1998 to the present day, building the operational expertise and engineering know-how that underpins all of JBC's subsequent projects.

The plant has evolved through two distinct stages — the original Jenbacher engines were paired with a dedicated methane reactor and H₂S removal system, followed by the addition of MWM Deutz engines.

Russifa is a dumpsite landfill — not a sanitary engineered landfill. This presents unique operational challenges including variable gas composition and higher H₂S concentrations, requiring specialised gas treatment solutions that JBC has mastered over 27 years of continuous operation.

TWO STAGES,
ONE VISION

The Russifa plant was developed in two distinct stages as gas volumes grew and treatment technology advanced. Both stages remain operational today, with JBC managing all aspects of operation, maintenance, and gas treatment.

Stage 1 — 1998

The original phase, commissioned in 1998, used Jenbacher reciprocating gas engines to generate electricity directly from raw landfill gas captured at the Russifa Dumpsite.

This stage also introduced a purpose-built reactor system to enrich and condition the biogas stream, along with a dedicated H₂S removal system to reduce hydrogen sulfide concentrations in the raw dumpsite gas — protecting engines from corrosion and improving gas quality from day one.

Stage 2 — Expansion
MWM DEUTZ
ENGINES
MWM Deutz Engine Series

The second stage introduced MWM Deutz engines to expand the plant's generating capacity, running on the same conditioned biogas supply established in Stage 1.

This expansion increased Russifa's total output while benefiting from the gas conditioning and H₂S removal infrastructure already in place — significantly improving gas quality and engine performance across the whole site.

A network of gas extraction wells installed across the Russifa Dumpsite captures methane-rich landfill gas from decomposing organic waste. Gas is piped to the power station for conditioning and combustion.

H₂S Removal System
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a naturally occurring corrosive component of dumpsite gas. The H₂S removal system strips H₂S from the gas stream before it reaches the engines, protecting equipment and reducing harmful emissions.

The original Jenbacher gas engines have operated at the site since 1998. JBC engineers perform all maintenance levels in-house — from routine A-level services to full D-level overhauls — keeping these engines running for over 27 years.
